There Were Three but Now….

There are five!!!

It’s been a very exciting weekend!!! With this heat the most important thing is to be sure these calves are not left out in the blazing sun and that all of the herd has water and shade! Each morning and afternoon involves a head count as well as relocating any calves that have decided to just park themselves in the sun. Sometimes this involves physically picking them up and moving them in to the shade. Most of the time their mamas will be sure they are safe….but sometimes you have to step in and relocate them to safe shade….calves will dehydrate quickly in the hot sun.

Another Wonderful Surprise!

Little Spunky has had her first calf! She has had it tucked away in the undergrowth to protect it from the brutal sun.

Predator Watch!!!!

As you have read in one of my previous posts…a part of taking care of your livestock includes managing predators that also want to enjoy your animals.

The coyotes have been getting closer and closer to the herd. I have several young calves and I am on HIGH alert.

Last night the coyotes were up around the farmhouse….like….close!!!! So close that I found scat in the pasture right next to the farmhouse:

One of the things that is important to learn is recognizing scat. Scat is the term for the droppings of animals. Understanding scat is an important tool in identifying an animal as well as understanding that animals health. At first sighting this morning I thought that this animal had been eating cockroaches….but after a closer look ….it has made me thing that those brown oval things are seeds.???

Interesting….

More Glorious Rain!!

More and more glorious rain!  After the years of drought I am embracing this most recent rain event!  However, I have come across some more notable ways that our wildlife is coping with the deluge!

The other night I came upon a Doe and her fawn carefully picking their way across the road….at night….with creeks running high!  I slowed way down to allow mother and baby to cross the road slowly and mother doe carefully searched along the fence line for a small break in the fence that both she and baby could escape through!  Please keep your eye out for all of God’s creature trying to navigate their way to higher ground!  Be patient!  Be mindful!
